--Majored in Sociology at UMKC.
--"Came out" on March 26, 1990 at the age of 19 and formed a student group on campus (Gay & Lesbian Student Alliance) since there wasn't already one there.
--Began career at Planned Parenthood of Greater Kansas City as Public Affairs Coordinator after college and learned so very much about politics and the world. I owe a huge debt to my boss and mentor Erika Fox, the Director of Public Affairs.
--Moved to NJ for one-year graduate program at Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers University.
--Lived in Washington, DC for four years (1995-1999) working at Americans United for Separation of Church & State and handling their state legislative needs.
--Volunteered and devoted much of my time for 3 years (1996-1999) to SMYAL (Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League- the gay youth center in DC)
--Moved to San Francisco, CA in summer of 1999 to L-I-V-E.
--Worked for political consulting firm in San Francisco, Barnes, Mosher, Whitehurst, Lauter & Partners, doing local electoral politics during the '99 and 2000 elections. Robert Barnes got me my start here in San Francisco and I miss him.
--Began new field of public health care policy in June 2001 by becoming Executive Director of the California Tuberculosis Controllers Association. Ended this position in May 2003. At the end of my tenure with them, they presented me with the award below in front of the 300 people attending our biannual conference. (See below)
--Unemployed during the summer of 2003, enjoyed the time, read books, learned a lot about myself, and relaxed.
